Mary Banda, MD, is a senior medical doctor with over 25 years of experience in hospital medicine and a Fellow in both the American College of Physicians and Hospital Medicine,. Mary graduated Magna Cum Laude with a duel degree in chemistry and biology before earning her Medical Doctorate with academic excellence from Pennsylvania State University. She completed her residency at Hershey Medical Center, earning board certification in internal medicine and has since been further trained in hyperbaric medicine.
Working at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield MA, she helped to pioneer the first full-time hospitalist program in the United States. Throughout her career, she has served as a speaker at medical conferences and continuing medical education. She has served as clinical professor to medical students, residents, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. Her medical expertise and volunteer work earned her the Mercy Medical Center Community Service Physician of the year award, Springfield Stone Soul Festival award, October 2nd being designated as Dr. Mary Banda Day, Springfield Mayor Proclamation, YMCA woman of achievement award, Catholic Woman of the Year award and Massachusetts Congress and Senator Citations.
While Dr. Banda has served as a physician for the majority of her adult life, her true passion is her non-profit charitable organization, Jambo Tanzania, INC (www.jambotanzania.us). Dedicated to bettering the lives and providing healthcare to the people of Bukoba, Tanzania, her efforts have led to the construction of an elementary school in Gera, a well that has provided clean water to the villagers and school children, and the near completion of a health care center and hospital. She routinely organizes volunteer missions serving up to 2,000 patients every other year. Her future goal is to provide 24/7 medical longitudinal care at the Kashambya area hospital. In addition, she has served as deputy director of BUDEFO (Bukoba Development Foundation) and is an investing member of BIG (Bukoba Investment Group). Ultimately, she hopes to spread the blessings and opportunities that she feels so fortunate to have received.
